Follow These 3 Easy Steps to Draft Your Ideal Target with AI

Clarity on your Ideal Target helps you focus time and resources on your most valuable, profitable customers, and AI can help if you feed it the right inputs.

Here’s a simple 3-step approach to guide you through the process of developing an Ideal Target description, B2B Roles, and/or B2C Personas using your own insights paired with a few smart prompts.

Step 1: Collect Inputs

Before jumping in, gather the foundational inputs. Don’t worry if you don’t have every item, just document what’s available.

  • List of current customers – company names (especially those you want more of)

  • List of titles / roles that you most commonly work with (and want to reach)

  • CRM data (segments, key accounts)

  • Competitive research (websites, messaging, positioning)

  • Customer reviews (Google, website, or surveys)

  • Stakeholder interview notes*

  • Customer interview notes*

Step 2: Organize and Prompt (Using a GPT)

  • Confirm that all files are correctly named and organized for easy reference.

  • Upload your files into your GPT (like ChatGPT) and use the prompts below to generate working drafts of your Ideal Target profile.

  • Note any special instructions, like industry focus or specific target segments, to guide the prompts.

AI Prompts to Use

  • Draft Ideal Target Summary: Use the following prompt to have AI draft a concise summary of your Ideal Target:

    • “Please review the uploaded files, create a concise Ideal Target Summary, including industry or sector, typical company size, key business challenges, common triggers for seeking services, and desired outcomes.”

  • For B2B Ideal Targets – Develop Role Descriptions: Use this prompt to identify key roles within the Ideal Target:

    • “Using the same set of inputs, identify the main roles within your Ideal Target, including Decision Makers, Economic Buyers, Influencers, and Technical Buyers. Include job titles, role in the buying process, pain points, motivations, key concerns, and barriers to purchasing.”

Step 3: Review and Finalize

Using a GPT is a helpful way to get started fast. But it’s just a starting point. The key is to review, refine, and edit the output to make sure it reflects your Ideal Target and brand.

  • Review with internal teams (e.g., sales, marketing, customer success) to ensure alignment and accuracy before finalizing.
